The Memory Hole
Remember how Candidate Obama ran as the peace candidate? He promised that the first thing he would do as president would be to bring the troops home:
Ah, that pesky YouTube. Wonder how long it will survive if the government declares a "cyber emergency"?
Anyway, there are still troops (a lot of them) in Iraq and now President Obama is planning on sending an additional 40,000 more troops to Afghanistan. But wait, he just said...I know, I know, we're all a little confused.

and there never was. I will begin to remove our troops from Iraq immediately."

I've read that this will cost an extra $40 billion per year as well. Remember the old schoolyard taunt of "Liar, liar, pants on fire"? Well, Mr. Obama's pants are ready to spontaneously combust! Stop, drop and roll...

And speaking of that, where's the weapons and everything that start this on the first place?

Yea and he also stumped against the Patriot Act, now he apparently likes it. The winner of the Nobel Peace Prize huh? Bring them all home now from all foreign ground! Protect ourselves if attacked, that is the reason it is called DEFENSE!

I just hope that everyone now ripping Obama for inconsistency was also outraged by the last administration's penchant for lying about the reasons we got into this mess. Oh, and its decision to read ALL your emails and listen to all your cellphone calls in the name of, I believe, our freedom.
Obama has people screeching at him for not moving fast enough on health care, military withdrawals, etc. Others are howling because they see him moving way too fast. Doesn't that mean he must be doing something right?

The Left-Right Paradigm is a diversion from the real issue--authoritarianism versus individual liberty. Below are some of the things that I wrote concerning Bush's policies when he was president, including the terrifying and awful policy of domestic spying.

Now imagine 40 of those...
It just boggles the mind.
To give you an idea of how big those pallets are, they are about 40 inches tall or 101 cm. or a little taller than the average kitchen counter height.
Its crazy... This is gonna be another Vietnam. Or worse.. We will be in Iraq forever. Whats gonna happen if another world war happens? "Oh Im sorry all of the united states military is in Iraq
and we cant help you"
I don't agree with any of this Citizen X.
Its been 8 years since 9/11
Bring our troops home! Take care of us
first before anyone else..

To play devil's advocate for a second, the war he's referring to here is the one in Iraq. He campaigned by saying that the Bush administration should have focused on Afghanistan instead of Iraq. At the time people pretty much agreed with him, on the logic that "Bin Laden is there and we need to kill him for 9/11!" Today that is looking like less and less of a good idea, and hopefully the man will eventually listen to everybody telling him to get the troops out of Afghanistan. But as far as Afghanistan goes he seems to be doing pretty much what he said he would. So he might be doing the wrong thing, but he isn't doing the opposite of what he said (in this case).
To stop playing devil's advocate, Iraq is another story entirely. He has taken his sweet time bringing the troops home from Iraq. My understanding (which may be wrong, since I'm not as knowledgeable about this stuff as I would like right now) is that as Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces, Obama doesn't need Congressional approval to withdraw military forces. But even if I'm mistaken about that, he could be trying harder. And I really hope his goal isn't to bring those guys home only to ship them to Afghanistan. I think it was Cornell West who recently said on one program or another that if you win the Nobel Peace Prize and a year or two after that you're still in two wars, then something's wrong with that picture.
"...including the terrifying and awful policy of domestic spying."
I wound up voting for Obama in the election, but there was a time in 2008 when I seriously considered not voting for either guy. It was when I heard then-Senator Obama's position on giving immunity to the telecom companies that had helped with the Bush administration's domestic surveillance. Obama was in favor of giving them immunity. I was upset and disappointed, and it made me wonder what other positions he might hold that I didn't agree with, what he might do if elected. I figured that one fewer vote wouldn't make a difference, and that if the winning candidate did something unethical I could at least take comfort in the knowledge that I didn't help make it happen.
Ultimately I decided to vote Obama/Biden because I believed most of what he was promising. The guy was against the Iraq War when it was an unpopular position to take, I reasoned, so at the very least I assumed that he had been wanting to put an end to that for years and could be counted on to do so. His vote on telecom immunity, I overlooked. The rest of it, I pretty much took on faith.
Maybe that was a mistake. Not a whole lot has changed, and I thought I was voting for a guy who was committed to changing things for the better. It was only his campaign slogan, after all. So far we're seeing possible health care reform and...that's pretty much it. Any progress towards other goals seems to be a slow crawl at best.
