I'm not by nature opposed to public work programs, especially when private industry is retracting. Something like remodeling the IRS building will create jobs. The problem as I can see is that its effect is limited. Once the construction work has been finished, the workers are again without a job and no new jobs have been created. When the government gets involved in public works, it needs to be something like the TVA, highways, transport, etc. that will cause a prolonged growth in the private sector. Things like the swimming pool just happen to be additional waste, meaning more money that has been spent on public buildings that won't encourage any future job growth.

I am sick and tired of all the added "security" everywhere, that is nothing more than a dog and pony show to make people feel more "safe", all at the expense of personal liberties.

Case and point, a few years back I went with three buddies of mine to Canada to hit up the casino and a few bars. Of course getting into Canada was not a problem, but coming back into the U.S., however, was an orderal. There we are, 4 very average looking young American guys, all with valid ID, and the overzealous Customs agent felt the need to interrogate us, pull me out of the car and search the trunk, AND, while I was out of the car and he was searching the trunk, I had to put my hands on the car like a criminal that was about to be frisked and cuffed. Ridiculous that four tax paying, law abiding citizens would have to put up with this crap to get back into our own damn country. Of course they have to do things like this to every so many cars in order to justify the need for their job. And also it must be random so they can't be accused of "racial profiling".

Nonsense. I say go after your targets and leave the rest of us alone. If the day ever comes that white males in their 20's with clean criminal records (and they know this because they run your IDs) happen to be on a terror binge, then fine, stop us and question us all they want. Until then, let us pass, and be happy that we pay their salaries with our tax money, and maybe keep a close eye on people of Middle Eastern desent. Sorry, I know there are plenty of good people of that background, but maybe they should be speaking out and encouraging that fringe faction of their people to stop all the terrorist attacks.

I don't have a problem with security, but I do have a problem with being harassed when I want to get back into MY OWN COUNTRY...and especially so knowing all the people who don't belong here that are flooding over our southern border, and now we are afraid to make them leave? Come on.

Ariann, I agree with you 100% on this one. The Pharmaceutical companies are totally entwined with the FDA...There are PLENTY of cures out there naturally, but the pharmaceutical companies cannot pattern something natural, so they must extract the natural healing properties and try to synthesize it. If that doesn't work then they just give you another ten pills to ease or pain and keep money in their pockets!!

The sad thing is, I don't think the totalitarians ever dreamed they'd get this far this fast. I believe that many of the attacks on freedom that have occured during my lifetime were never even expected to succeed by the lawmakers and lobbyists who launched them, but were merely being used as a probe for how many dissenters there were, a gauge for how obedient their "subjects" had become. It's only when they found the resistance to be negligible that the open season on the Constitution began in earnest. But the fact that sites like this one exist shows that they underestimated us. Even people with no interest in politics are distrustful of the government. They just can't pinpoint why. That's where we come in.

I hope everyone is watching the Senate Banking Committee discovery session on the Bear Stearns bailout:

Lawmakers opened hearings into the dramatic rescue of Bear Stearns, with top officials of the Federal Reserve and the Treasury Department defending their actions to save the Wall Street giant from bankruptcy.

The officials said the sudden collapse of the nation's fifth largest investment bank would have had unpredictable but likely severe consequences on the nation's health. In short, stock prices may have plunged, and the resulting turmoil would have lowered home prices and credit for hoWhile there were risks to taxpayers and to financial regulators from the bailout, these paled in comparison to the economic risks, the officials said.

"Are there risks here? Yes, but the risks are modest in comparison to the substantial damage to the economy and economic well-being that potentially would have accompanied Bear's insolvency," said New York Federal Reserve President Timothy Geithner, who resume the central role in the 96 hours of behind-the-scenes rush to rescue Bear Stearns.
